2026 ASWB Exam Updates

What We Know So Far

Test-Prep

The ASWB is updating the social work licensing exams to ensure they accurately reflect today’s professional practice and uphold the responsibility the profession carries to serve vulnerable client populations. Guided by the 2024 practice analysis and extensive input from practicing social workers and subject matter experts, the updated exams are expected to launch in August 2026.

What’s Changing?

  • Updated content outlines: The exam blueprints have been reorganized from four content areas to three, based on feedback from over 25,000 social workers in the 2024 practice analysis. This reorganization improves clarity and relevance without removing major content.
  • Applied knowledge focus: Knowledge, skills, and abilities statements (KSAs) have been converted to applied knowledge statements, reflecting the exams’ focus on demonstrating competence rather than recalling facts.
  • Stronger emphasis on values and ethics: The 2026 blueprints prioritize the values and ethics content area, giving it the highest percentage of questions to reflect the profession’s guiding principles.
  • Revised structure: The overall exam format has been updated to better support candidate experience and applied decision-making, while continuing to meet strict psychometric standards.

The goal is to ensure the exams are fair, accurate, and truly reflective of social work practice in both the U.S. and Canada.

2018 vs. 2026 Exam Format at a Glance

  • The exam structure will shift from four content areas (2018) to three content areas (2026), reflecting consolidation based on the 2024 practice analysis.
  • Both versions use three- and four-option multiple-choice questions, but the 2026 exams will include more questions with three answer options.
  • The total number of questions will decrease, from 150 operational and 20 pretest questions in 2018 to 110 operational and 12 pretest questions in 2026.
  • The four-hour time limit will remain unchanged.
  • The 2026 exams will continue to meet psychometric standards for validity, reliability, and fairness, while placing greater emphasis on applied knowledge and reasoning.

What This Means for Exam Candidates

The 2026 ASWB exams are designed to better mirror real-world practice by prioritizing applied reasoning, ethical decision-making, and professional judgment. While the structure is changing, the goal remains the same: to ensure licensed social workers are prepared for the responsibilities of professional practice.
