Overview:

This full-day training is designed to build foundational knowledge about the health disparities, systemic barriers, and social experiences faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. Through an exploration of trauma-informed care, inclusive practices, and intersectionality, participants will enhance their capacity to deliver competent and affirming services across healthcare, social work, and mental health settings. The session includes discussion-based and didactic components, with attention to marginalized subpopulations within the LGBTQ+ community.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the session, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the social determinants of health that impact LGBTQ+ individuals, including how systemic inequities contribute to health disparities.
  • Apply trauma-informed principles to interactions with LGBTQ+ clients in healthcare and behavioral health settings.
  • Identify strategies for creating inclusive environments in clinical practice, including language use, forms, and data collection procedures.
  • Analyze the impact of intersectionality on health outcomes among LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly those who are BIPOC, disabled, or living in rural/low-income communities.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of diverse LGBTQ+ family and relationship structures and describe inclusive approaches to reproductive and family planning support.

Presenters:

Tee Joseph, Executive Director of the Transgender Awareness Alliance

Tee Joseph is a dedicated advocate for marginalized communities, renowned for their unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Born in the UK and moving to New York at 16, Tee has resided in South Carolina since 2005, where they have focused their career on championing the rights and dignity of underserved populations. As the Executive Director of the Transgender Awareness Alliance, Tee leads efforts to provide essential aid, resources, and advocacy for the transgender community. They also serve as the CFO and facilitator for MisKonception, creating tailored training programs that promote workplace equity and respect. Tee is a certified Community Health Worker (CHW) and a Center for Community Health Alignment Ambassador, roles in which they advocate for improved healthcare access and education, particularly for vulnerable groups. Their influence is furthered by their participation as a Families USA Fellow for 2023-2024, contributing to national healthcare policy discussions. Tee’s work is driven by a core belief in the right of every individual to live freely and express themselves without harm. They are compassionate and dedicated to creating inclusive spaces inspiring with kindness, love, and guidance, to ensure people’s gifts shine.

Charity Muse, MS, BCC

Charity Muse, MS, BCC, provides coaching, consultation, and training in spiritual wellness, leadership, and inclusivity. Previously, she worked as a therapist in private practice in North Georgia where she specialized in serving the LGBTQ+ community. Charity’s additional background in collegiate & community mental health included leading the counseling center at a small liberal arts college where she also designed outreach and workshops for a variety of diversity and mental health topics. As a sought-after speaker, Charity has a relaxed yet professional approach to teaching which combines theory, competencies, personal stories, and clinical experience as a therapist. She has written for LGBTQ+ spiritual resources and has published LGBTQ+ fiction and poetry. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her wife, kids, and friends, songwriting, cooking, and hiking.

Zander Keig, LCSW, Public Speaker and Advocate within the Transgender and Veteran Communities

Zander Keig is a distinguished figure known for his work as a social worker, educator, public speaker, and advocate, particularly within the transgender and veteran communities. He is a U.S. Coast Guard veteran and a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW).

Recognized nationally as a subject matter expert on transgender issues, Keig has dedicated much of his career to supporting transgender individuals, including active duty service members and veterans. He played an instrumental role in establishing and developing the Navy Medicine West Regional Transgender Care Team, where he managed a significant caseload of active duty service members navigating gender transition from July 2016 to January 2019.

Keig’s contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including being named NASW National Social Worker of the Year and NASW California Social Worker of the Year. He is also the author and co-editor of several books focusing on the transgender experience, including the anthology Letters for My Brothers: Transitional Wisdom in Retrospect (Wilgefortis Press, 2010) and his memoir, The Third Space: A Nonconformist’s Guide to the Universe (Thought Leader Press, 2024).

Beyond his clinical and advocacy work, Keig is a public speaker and workshop facilitator, frequently presenting on topics such as emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, social care, family caregiving, and cultural competency. He co-founded the LGBTQ Caregiver Center after his father developed dementia. He has been involved with various organizations, including the Transgender American Veterans Association, Braver Angels, and the Prohuman Foundation.

Keig is a 59-year-old first-generation American of Mexican heritage. His personal journey and professional expertise have made him a significant voice and resource in social work, LGBT advocacy, and veteran support.
