Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, evidence-informed approach that helps people explore ambivalence and move toward change. This course introduces MI’s history, spirit, and core processes, and translates ethics into everyday practice. Through demonstrations and guided practice, participants learn reflective listening, OARS skills, and strategies for evoking change talk—while examining bias, culture, and power dynamics that shape client engagement. The session emphasizes self-reflection, self-monitoring, and professional boundaries to align MI practice with prevailing ethical standards.
By attending this training, you will be able to:
1. Recall the basic terminology and framework of motivational interviewing
2. Examine the meaning of using style and spirit with motivational interviewing techniques
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the motivational interviewing process
4. Discover basic techniques for using motivational interviewing in each process step<

6. Examine the practice of reflection, self-monitoring and regulation to ensure ethical practice in Motivational Interviewing
Rhonda DiNovo serves as Clinical Assistant Professor, MSW Program Coordinator, and Coordinator of the Graduate Drug and Addictions Studies Certificate Program in the College of Social Work at the University of South Carolina. She teaches students important theoretical and practical approaches in interdisciplinary health and mental health, as well as principles and practices of motivational interviewing and cognitive behavior therapy. Rhonda also serves as Field Supervisor and Director of the West Columbia Outreach Program, a police social work outreach service offered through the West Columbia Police Department that provides brief screening, assessment, and referral to treatment services and community resources to those in mental health and substance use crises. Prior to becoming a full-time faculty member in the College of Social Work, Rhonda served 3 years as Director of Substance Abuse Prevention and Education for the University of South Carolina, and 8 years as Prevention Specialist for adolescents and their families at LRADAC.
