OVERVIEW:

There is a profound and dynamic relationship between mental health and financial wellbeing. In times of economic uncertainty, financial stress can exacerbate or precipitate mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, trauma-related symptoms, and suicidality. This intermediate-level training, led by licensed clinical professional counselor and financial therapist Joyce Marter, explores the intersection of financial and psychological health through an integrative and evidence-informed lens.

Participants will examine the psychological foundations of financial behavior, including money scripts, cognitive distortions, and intergenerational money narratives. The training will also address financial trauma, financial abuse within relationships, and culturally informed beliefs that shape financial attitudes and behaviors. Clinical strategies rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), narrative therapy, and mindfulness-based interventions will be presented to help clients enhance their financial functioning and emotional resilience.

This program includes downloadable tools, clinical resources, and intervention exercises that participants can implement immediately in their practice to support clients’ financial empowerment and psychological recovery.

OBJECTIVES:

By attending this training, you will be able to:

  • Describe the bidirectional relationship between financial health and mental health, including common psychological responses to financial stress.
  • Explain how self-worth and identity are related to perceived and actual net worth.
  • Identify clinical strategies to help clients address financial trauma, scarcity mindset, and money anxiety.
  • Apply therapeutic techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and mindfulness practices to promote clients’ financial wellness.
  • Analyze the influence of intergenerational financial trauma and cultural beliefs on clients’ financial behaviors and implement psychoeducational tools to support financial healing.
