OVERVIEW:
Perimenopause is a major biopsychosocial transition that can significantly affect mood, cognition, identity, relationships, and overall functioning. This training equips helping professionals to recognize common psychological, emotional, and cognitive presentations associated with perimenopause (e.g., anxiety, depression, irritability/rage, brain fog, memory lapses), and to differentiate these from primary mood and anxiety disorders in ways that improve assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment planning.
OBJECTIVES:
By attending this training, you will be able to:
1. Identify the key psychological, emotional, and cognitive symptoms of perimenopause and distinguish them from primary mood and anxiety disorders commonly seen in clinical practice.
2. Evaluate client presentations through a biopsychosocial framework that integrates hormonal changes, identity shifts, role transitions, and sociocultural factors influencing women’s midlife mental health.
3. Apply developmentally appropriate therapeutic strategies to support clients experiencing perimenopause, including psychoeducation, validation, identity work, and guidance on navigating medical care and self-advocacy.

PRESENTER BIO:
Bethany Comeau is a licensed professional counselor in private practice based in Americus, Georgia, with nearly 20 years experience in the mental health field. In addition to working with clients whose anxiety is rooted in perfectionism and people pleasing, her clinical areas of focus also include grief and loss, infertility, and The Highly Sensitive Person. Bethany is also a recovering perfectionist and people pleaser, and deeply passionate about helping others who are struggling with types of trauma responses learn how to find their way back to themselves.
