OVERVIEW:

This training features a screening of the award-winning documentary Optics of Aging, followed by an interactive conversation with producer Michelle Le Brun. The film highlights the lived experiences of five elders whose voices and activism have shaped cultural and political landscapes, challenging stereotypes and reframing the narrative around aging. Through cinematic storytelling and personal testimony, participants will gain deeper insight into the psychosocial, cultural, and ethical dimensions of aging.

The facilitated discussion will connect the documentary’s themes to clinical practice, emphasizing ways professionals can address ageism, support resilience across the lifespan, and ethically integrate clients’ lived experiences into treatment and community practice. The program is designed for helping professionals in social work, psychology, counseling, nursing, and related fields.

OBJECTIVES:

By attending this training, you will be able to:

  • Critically analyze the ways ageism and cultural stereotypes about older adults influence clinical practice, client identity, and social policy.
  • Identify strategies to promote resilience, purpose, and dignity in older adults by drawing on narratives, cultural contributions, and strengths-based approaches.
  • Examine the impact of ageism on mental health, identity, and access to care

PRESENTER BIO:

Michelle Le Brun, President, Harken Productions
Michelle Le Brun has been creating films for over 25 years, beginning with her award-winning documentary Death: A Love Story (1999), which premiered at Sundance, aired on PBS and CBC, and continues to be taught at more than 500 universities. In addition to producing and directing, she has dedicated over 30 years to teaching at institutions including Lesley University and the University of Rhode Island, where her focus has been on media literacy, civic engagement, and empowering people to use film as a tool for social change. She founded HARKEN! Youth Media in Los Angeles and later brought the program to Rhode Island, helping underserved youth develop critical thinking, creativity, and leadership through documentary filmmaking.

Her work spans shorts broadcast on PBS—such as An Offering, Gone Fishin’, and Ruth Dealy: A Portrait—as well as her current feature, Optics of Aging, which celebrates the vitality of elders and has earned festival awards and sold-out screenings. Across her career, Le Brun’s films and teaching have illuminated stories that challenge stereotypes and inspire dialogue, with her work accessible through Vimeo and ongoing screenings nationwide.
