Overview
Stigma is a process in which society judges and excludes a person with mental illness or substance use disorder
from mainstream society. Stigma can have devastating effects on individuals and families resulting in poor clinical
outcomes, worsened overall well-being, and long-term negative societal consequences. People with mental health and
substance use disorders often internalize stigma, which increases embarrassment and undermines self-efficacy, which
worsens prospects for recovery. Stigma is often perpetuated by family members and helping professionals. In this eyeopening presentation by Rhonda DiNovo, LMSW, Clinical Assistant Professor, USC, COSW, we will discuss ethical and
effective approaches for recognizing implicit bias and utilizing recovery language. This training will enable helping
professions in selecting evidence-based approaches to reduce stigma and its impact and addressing discriminatory
policies and practices.
