Overview:
This continuing education course explores career development through the lens of neurodiversity, with particular attention to adults with ADHD and other neurodivergent patterns of thinking, motivation, and attention. Drawing from the Behavioral Health Today episode featuring career coach Shell Mendelson, the course examines how traditional approaches to career selection may fail to account for individual differences in interests, energy, values, work environment, and cognitive style. Mendelson emphasizes moving beyond résumés, personality tests, and conventional measures of career aptitude toward a more reflective process of identifying meaningful work that aligns with a person’s strengths, needs, and sense of purpose.
Participants will consider how career dissatisfaction, repeated occupational difficulties, and diminished professional confidence may affect neurodivergent clients. The course also introduces strategies for helping individuals clarify career interests, recognize personal strengths, evaluate workplace fit, and develop greater confidence in career decision-making. Particular emphasis is placed on supporting clients in pursuing work that is not merely achievable, but sustainable, engaging, and personally fulfilling.
