Overview:

Mental health and substance use disorders remain among the most stigmatized health conditions and can block access to education, housing, employment, and care. This training integrates stigma-reduction and shame-recovery work to help clinicians create therapeutic environments where clients can examine beliefs, fears, and self-criticism, and replace them with acceptance and skillful coping. We’ll highlight considerations for men, LGBTQ+ clients, and older adults; show how a strong therapeutic alliance mitigates stigma; and apply a resilience-growth model to conditions such as trauma, anxiety, depression, binge eating, substance use, and anger. Practical, in-session exercises and targeted strategies are provided to strengthen engagement and outcomes.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the session, the participant will be able to:

  • Summarize the ways in which stigmas affect beliefs, thoughts, and decisions about mental illness.
  • Describe steps that clinicians can take to help clients address and overcome the stigma of mental illness with clients.
  • Discover multiple therapeutic approaches and interventions to address shame with clients.
  • Explain at least five core concepts of shame and three examples of shame related to mental health.
  • Discover multiple therapeutic approaches and interventions to address shame with clients.
  • Employ resilience-growth models of shame recovery to enhance coping and wellness.
