OVERVIEW:

This training begins with a screening of the award-winning documentary "Optics of Aging," followed by an interactive discussion with producer Michelle Le Brun. The film and discussion invite participants to examine how older adults are portrayed in society and how aging is shaped by culture, identity, advocacy, and lived experience.

Participants will examine the impact of ageism on mental health, identity, treatment engagement, and access to care in later life. The training will also explore strengths-based, culturally responsive, and meaning-centered approaches to working with older adults experiencing transitions related to grief, loss, retirement, caregiving, illness, role change, and social isolation.

Through film, reflective dialogue, clinical instruction, and case-based application, participants will strengthen their ability to identify age-related bias, recognize resilience and protective factors in older adulthood, and apply practical intervention strategies that support dignity, autonomy, meaning, and psychological well-being.

OBJECTIVES:

By attending this training, you will be able to:

1. Analyze how ageism and cultural narratives about aging affect case conceptualization, diagnostic impressions, and treatment engagement.
2. Identify common psychosocial stressors and mental health concerns associated with later-life transitions.
3. Analyze resilience and protective factors that may mitigate depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and social disconnection in older adults.
4. Apply strengths-based, culturally responsive, and meaning-centered interventions to clinical scenarios involving older adult clients.
5. Differentiate between clinician bias and evidence-based assessment considerations when evaluating the needs of older adults.

Michelle Le Brun, President, Harken Productions

Michelle Le Brun has been creating films for over 25 years, beginning with her award-winning documentary "Death: A Love Story" (1999), which premiered at Sundance, aired on PBS and CBC, and continues to be taught at more than 500 universities. In addition to producing and directing, she has dedicated over 30 years to teaching at institutions including Lesley University and the University of Rhode Island, where her focus has been on media literacy, civic engagement, and empowering people to use film as a tool for social change. She founded HARKEN!
