Sexuality remains an important dimension of identity, connection, health, and quality of life across the lifespan, including in later adulthood. This 2-hour training explores human sexuality within the older adult population, with attention to age-related physical, emotional, relational, cultural, cognitive, and social factors that may shape sexual expression and intimacy. Participants will examine common myths and biases about aging and sexuality; consider the impact of health conditions, medications, grief, disability, dementia, long-term care environments, and changing relationships; and identify ethical, person-centered ways to support older adults’ sexual rights, autonomy, safety, consent, and dignity.
By attending this training, you will be able to:
1. Describe biological, psychological, social, cultural, and relational factors that influence sexuality, intimacy, and sexual health among older adults.
2. Identify common myths, stigmas, and professional biases related to sexuality in later life and explain how these attitudes may affect assessment, communication, and care.
3. Apply ethical and person-centered strategies for discussing sexuality, supporting autonomy and consent, and responding to sexual health concerns among older adults in clinical, community, and long-term care settings.
