OVERVIEW:

This course provides a structured review of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR) to support mental health clinicians in maintaining diagnostic accuracy, ethical decision-making, and culturally responsive assessment practices. Participants will revisit core diagnostic principles, common diagnostic categories encountered in clinical practice, and the process of differential diagnosis across mood, anxiety, trauma-related, and psychotic disorders.

Emphasis will be placed on translating diagnostic criteria into real-world clinical assessment while avoiding common diagnostic errors such as over-pathologizing normative distress, misattributing trauma-related symptoms, or overlooking medical and substance-related contributors. The course will also examine ethical considerations in diagnosis, including the clinical and systemic consequences of diagnostic decisions for treatment planning, insurance reimbursement, documentation, and continuity of care.

Participants will explore how cultural context, social determinants of health, and client identity influence symptom presentation and diagnostic interpretation, drawing on guidance from the DSM-5-TR Cultural Formulation Interview. Practical case examples will be used to strengthen clinicians’ ability to apply differential diagnosis thoughtfully, reduce bias in diagnostic formulation, and ensure that diagnoses support appropriate, client-centered care.

OBJECTIVES:

By attending this training, you will be able to:

1. Recall key diagnostic criteria and updates within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR) relevant to common clinical presentations.
2. Apply structured differential diagnosis strategies to distinguish between overlapping psychiatric conditions.
3. Examine ethical considerations in diagnostic decision-making, including implications for treatment planning, documentation, and access to care.
4. Integrate cultural context and social determinants of health into diagnostic assessment using principles from the DSM-5-TR Cultural Formulation Interview.
5. Differentiate between closely related diagnostic categories by evaluating symptom duration, severity, functional impairment, and rule-out conditions.
6. Formulate a clinically appropriate diagnostic impression based on client presentation, assessment data, and relevant contextual factors, including culture, trauma history, and medical considerations.
