OVERVIEW:

The growing availability of mental health apps represents an exciting progression in the integration of technology within counseling practice. These tools can provide clients with convenient access to resources for symptom monitoring, coping skills, mindfulness, psychoeducation, behavior change, and other therapeutic goals. When thoughtfully incorporated into counseling, mental health apps may extend therapeutic support beyond the session and provide additional opportunities for clients to practice skills and monitor progress.

This training will examine the ethical and clinical considerations associated with incorporating mental health apps into therapeutic work. Participants will explore potential benefits and risks, including concerns related to privacy, confidentiality, data security, informed consent, accessibility, clinical appropriateness, and the limitations of digital tools. Practical strategies for evaluating mental health apps, discussing their use with clients, establishing appropriate expectations, and maintaining clinical oversight will be presented to support ethical and client-centered implementation.

OBJECTIVES:

By attending this training, you will be able to:

1. Explain at least three ethical considerations of using mental health apps in counseling.
2. Define and describe the benefits and risks of incorporating mental health apps into therapeutic work with clients.
3. Identify at least two best practice recommendations for ethical implementation of mental health apps.
