OVERVIEW:

The impact of addiction on the family system and individuals requires clinicians to have perspectives and approaches that are supportive and affirming. The morning workshop will introduce learners to family systems theory and its influence on addiction within families. Characteristics of the addicted and traumatized family system will be explored, along with the effects of addiction on the family. The role of grief within the family related to addiction will be presented along with key clinical recommendations. Interventions for supporting family members will provide learners with the confidence and perspectives necessary to enhance their clinical work. This training will focus on adult caregivers who have loved ones with an addiction.

Clinicians who work with families benefit from approaches that utilize solution-focused lenses and explore strengths. The afternoon segment will introduce learners to the concepts of family resilience, including protective traits and influential factors. Participants will learn about resilience-based questions to ask family members, family roles, homeostasis, and co-dependency. Learners will also explore family resilience by viewing case studies, therapeutic activities, and clinical resources that will enhance clinicians’ abilities to promote strengths, solutions, and resilience in all families.
