OVERVIEW:

This 5-hour training examines the ethical responsibilities involved in providing affirming, competent, and accessible care to LGBTQ+ individuals, families, and communities in rural settings. Rural LGBTQ+ clients often experience overlapping ethical vulnerabilities related to geographic isolation, limited provider choice, confidentiality concerns, stigma, dual relationships, lack of specialized services, telehealth barriers, and heightened visibility within small communities.

Using shared ethical principles across social work, counseling, and psychology, participants will explore how professional obligations related to dignity, nondiscrimination, competence, confidentiality, informed consent, boundaries, access to care, and advocacy apply in rural LGBTQ+ practice. Participants will explore practical decision-making strategies for ethically serving rural LGBTQ+ clients while balancing client autonomy, safety, professional boundaries, legal considerations, and the responsibility to reduce barriers to care.

OBJECTIVES:

By attending this training, you will be able to:

1. Identify at least three ethical challenges commonly encountered when providing services to LGBTQ+ individuals in rural communities.
2. Describe shared ethical obligations across social work, counseling, and psychology related to cultural competence, nondiscrimination, confidentiality, informed consent, and access to care.
3. Analyze ethical dilemmas involving privacy, visibility, dual relationships, telehealth, documentation, referral, and provider competence in rural LGBTQ+ care.
4. Apply an ethical decision-making model to case scenarios involving rural LGBTQ+ clients, families, schools, healthcare systems, and community-based services.
5. Develop practice strategies that support affirming, ethically sound, and culturally responsive care for rural LGBTQ+ clients while maintaining professional boundaries and managing risk.
