OVERVIEW:
Therapists often find the idea of couples therapy daunting and avoid adding it into their practice. Couples facing conflict often feel the same and may avoid couples therapy until it becomes a last resort. This 1-hour training is intended to foster acceptance of couples therapy by addressing common fears. It will begin with a discussion of ways that couples therapy is portrayed in the media and how it contributes to avoidance. This will be followed by an overview of key couples therapy concepts and how it is conducted. It will end with a brief overview of The Gottman Method and interventions to apply to couples work.
OBJECTIVES:
By attending this training, you will be able to:
1. Describe common fears around couples therapy that contribute to avoidance by therapists and couples.
2. Describe examples of couples therapy portrayed in the media and how it impacts both couples considering attending couples therapy and therapists considering providing couples therapy.
3. Describe key concepts about conducting couples therapy.
4. Apply interventions from The Gottman Method into their work with couples.

PRESENTER BIO:
Dawn Davis is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and AAMFT Approved Supervisor in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and Texas. Dawn has worked in community mental health since 2017 and has been in a supervisory position since 2020. Her supervisory experience includes supervising several clinicians at student-intern and master’s level and non-clinical providers, including certified peer specialists, nurse navigators, and behavioral health nurses. In 2020, Dawn opened her private practice, Therapy That Gets Me, LLC, where she currently serves as a full-time clinician and clinical supervisor. In addition, Dawn is a Certified Geek Therapist with special training in applying geek concepts to the therapeutic process. Dawn has also provided continuing education presentations for a variety of entities and organizations.
