Overview:

Perimenopause is a major biopsychosocial transition that can significantly affect mood, cognition, identity, relationships, and overall functioning. This training equips helping professionals to recognize common psychological, emotional, and cognitive presentations associated with perimenopause (e.g., anxiety, depression, irritability/rage, brain fog, memory lapses), and to differentiate these from primary mood and anxiety disorders in ways that improve assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment planning.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the session, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify the key psychological, emotional, and cognitive symptoms of perimenopause and distinguish them from primary mood and anxiety disorders commonly seen in clinical practice.
  • Evaluate client presentations through a biopsychosocial framework that integrates hormonal changes, identity shifts, role transitions, and sociocultural factors influencing women’s midlife mental health.
  • Apply developmentally appropriate therapeutic strategies to support clients experiencing perimenopause, including psychoeducation, validation, identity work, and guidance on navigating medical care and self-advocacy.
